Mobile Wallet Apps for Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Beyond

To store and transact with Bitcoin or Litecoin, you need a wallet. Which one should you choose, however? Which apps are safe? At Athena, we get these questions often. This article is meant to be a great starting point for anyone new to cryptocurrency or looking to switch wallets.

Athena already offers our own app for Bitcoin: The free "Athena Bitcoin" wallet app on both the Apple and Google Play stores. Based upon Airbitz technology, the Athena app is one of the most secure and easiest to use Bitcoin-only wallets on mobile. Later this year we expect to see a major upgrade which will increase the number of assets supported in the wallet. We expect support for Litecoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Dash. We also expect Segwit support, which will reduce the fees needed when you send your bitcoin.

Other Recommended Wallet Apps

There are other excellent wallets out there as well. Just beware of unreliable and fraudulent wallet apps! You can actually lose your crypto assets by using a bad app! Because new entrants into this space are unfamiliar with the crypto wallet landscape, we wanted to provide a list of other high-quality wallet apps that are commonly used. While we cannot tell you which ones to specifically avoid, nor can we guarantee the safety or suitability of any app in the below list, we wanted to provide you with enough of a choice so that, hopefully, you won't have a need to use a lesser-known app.

This list is intended as a starting point and is sufficient for most people. It is not meant to be comprehensive, nor does it include custodial or bank-like apps such as Coinbase. Only non-custodial wallets like those below give you full control over your coins and tokens, as well as enhanced privacy.

Final Notes

  • Always make a backup of the username/password or 12+ word seed/recovery phrase from these wallets whenever you create a new one! Write the backup down on paper and store it safely. Don't take screenshots or save your backup in an unencrypted file. Your backup is the only way to recover your funds if something happens to your device.
  • The safest crypto storage is not on your phone. Use hardware wallets such as the Trezor or Ledger to store larger amounts of compatible crypto assets.
